Fundraising

Last night at the Reel Rock Tour somebody from the BCA mentioned that during the last year the BCA has had a budget of $250 and $200 of that came from this guys wife. As a very active local climber I have never been asked to donate until last night. Just as a bum can't expect to be handed money without begging for it, the BCA can't expect people to donate without asking for donations. I am sure the area climbers would love to contribute to the cause but it seems, like everyone else, they need a little motivation. Why not stage a comp (or slideshow, raffle, etc.) with all or a part of the proceeds going to the BCA? Not sure what percentage of ticket sales for the Reel Rock Tour went to the BCA but it seems like they should have given you a decent percentage. What's your (BCA's) take is on this, maybe the $250 a year is enough to solve their problems? Then again everyone could use a little more money. Rent a sandblaster to erase the graffiti at Table Rock, Swan Falls, and Reynolds Creek, put in better trails at the Black Cliffs and Table Rock, pay for better signage, there are a number of things that more money would be good for.

Thanks for the feedback!

I greatly appreciate you taking the time to comment on this. IMHO, the problem we have had thus far is finding an effective mechanism for getting the message out.

Our old website had a forum that received almost zero traffic, because it didn't really achieve the "critical mass" as a social destination for area climbers. We have a mailing list with ~120 subscribers, and most of the addresses appear to be valid, but I guess either our events are just not interesting or we are being tagged as spam by everybody's junk mail filters. Either way, we don't seem to do well at rallying the community to get psyched about this stuff.

We've been trying to make some changes to establish a new foundation for ourselves. We've implemented this new web site, which allows members to discuss things in this forum, add content such as photos and other articles / bits of info they find interesting and want to share, etc. Sandy created a new logo, which we use on our site and we have printed on t-shirts, and we hope to get that logo printed on stickers, etc. to better advertise our existence in the community.

We've done a couple of slideshows in the past, but the person who was the driving force behind those earlier efforts has left Boise. The BSU Outdoor Program has been partnering on this stuff with us recently, and that I think has helped provide us with support organizationally as well as giving us some momentum and an infusion of "fresh energy".

We on the BCA board have really been hoping for an infusion of "fresh energy" into the BCA. Any suggestions on how we might do that are welcome. We hope to open up our monthly board meetings for all interested parties to attend and get involved.

I think throwing comps is a good idea. We could talk to Sus about support, specifically in terms of the Front. I'll certainly bring up the BCA in our next Outdoor Program meeting. I think we should have more competitions anyway. You have the OP's support.
