On Wednesday October 17th, the Boise State Outdoor Program will host two elite athletes whose adventurous lives have been spent living the balance between risk and reward. In climbing, the term “the sharp end” represents the risks these climbers have assumed as they travel to chase their passions and document their experiences on rock faces and the high peaks of the world.
The evening will feature both stunning visual imagery and captivating narration by Ed Viesturs and Micah Dash. These two athletes will share their similar but distinctly different experiences gathered from climbing and mountaineering the world’s hardest routes. Join Mountain Hardwear and Boise State’s Outdoor Program for an inspirational evening: Two leading climbers, two perspectives, many stories.
Presentations:
Mountain Hardwear athlete Ed Viesturs is considered America’s leading high-altitude mountaineer. While having summited Everest six times, it was in 2005 when he completed his 18 year quest to summit all of the fourteen 8000 meter peaks without supplemental oxygen. This quest was known as Endeavor 8000. Most recently Ed teamed up with renowned polar explorer Will Steger and entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson and traveled to Baffin Island in Antarctica. Their goal was to expose the effects of global warming on the delicate environment of the arctic by collecting stories, images, and sound and to give those who’ve been impacted a voice. Ed will share stories and images from both his Himalayan adventures and how his work in Antarctica will also be used to expose the effects of global warming on the delicate environment of the polar ice caps.
Mountain Hardwear athlete Micah Dash, who will be speaking first, has distinguished himself both through his ability as a speed climber and his bold, big-wall climbing. Micah has been awarded numerous grants and awards for his expeditions and has also been covered extensively in Climbing Magazine, Alpinist, and Rock and Ice. His bold climbing efforts have secured him first ascents in Greenland, Pakistan and most recently India. During the presentation, Micah will cover his most exciting pursuits and his recent expedition to the Indian Himalaya where he made the first ascent of the Shafaat Fortress, a 1,100 meter big wall. The presentation will also include other climbing adventures in Yosemite and at Indian Creek, Utah.
Event Sponsors:
This evening truly could not have happened if it were not for the title sponsor, Mountain Hardwear. The event was envisioned and borne from the manufacturer’s commitment to the outdoor community. The Boise event was added to the six stop - university tour through the efforts of the Boise State student staff that have helped organize the event.
